We were delighted to welcome the award-winning Irish author Marita Conlon-McKenna to the school on Tuesday, the 28th April.
Marita met with the 5th class boys and girls, who have all read her first novel, Under the Hawthorn Tree. The book is a favourite with both teachers and pupils, bringing the harsh realities of the Famine to life through the eyes of children. She spoke about what inspired her to write the story, as well as the research involved and her approach to writing novels more generally.
Marita also spoke about her love of writing, which she has had from a very young age. She described how she has a “crazy brain” that is always coming up with new ideas and stories. She also shared some memories of growing up in Goatstown and Greystones, which the children really enjoyed hearing about. She is a fantastic storyteller!
The children presented Marita with flowers as a thank you for her wonderful presentation. Marita left the children with a message – try to join the local library and read as much as possible!
Marita answered some questions from the children and even left Mary Mother of Hope with a few autographs and signed books. She admired the beautiful artwork by 5th Class based on the cover page of Under the Hawthorn Tree.
A huge thank you to Ms. Galligan for organising this visit! We are very grateful to Marita for her time.
