Green Schools Newsletter

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This year the children and staff of Mary Mother of Hope SNS are working towards our Fourth Green Flag as part of the Green Schools programme. We have already achieved flags for working on the following themes: ‘Litter and Waste’, ‘Energy’ and ‘Water’. We are currently working on the theme of ‘Travel’.

The Green Schools programme is a way for schools to take environmental issues from the curriculum and apply them to the day to day running of the school. It aims to extend learning beyond the classroom and develop responsible attitudes and commitment both at home and in the wider community.

Last week our fantastic Green School members carried out travel surveys in each class to see how our children travel to school. Our surveys showed that walking is the most used mode of transport to our school with travelling by car coming in second.

We at Mary Mother of Hope Senior N.S. are taking part in ‘The Big Travel Challenge competition’. This involves promoting and increasing one sustainable mode of transport to school during the month of February. The Green School Committee have picked cycling as our mode of transport to promote and increase. For the remainder of February some Green School Committee members are doing daily bike counts.

We hope you can join us and help promote ‘cycling’ to school each day for the remainder of February. If our school is lucky enough to win the competition there are some fantastic prizes up for grabs.

So please try your best if you can to encourage your child/children to cycle to school any day that is possible. Your effort will be much appreciated by the Green School Committee.

Thank you for your continued support,

The Green Schools Committee
